Drug Abuse Info
Before we begin, a few words to define some of the terms we’ll be using. Let’s begin by clarifying the difference between the terms drug abuse and drug addiction. Unfortunately, these terms are often used interchangeably. Although the distinction may seem slight, it is significant.
According to experts in this field, the term “abuse” can be defined as: “the non-medical use of a substance to achieve pleasurable sensations or avoid unpleasurable sensations.”
The term “addiction,” on the other hand, is defined as “prolonged or continued use of a substance, despite adverse effects on one’s self or others.”
In other words, any use of a mind-altering substance outside the context of its prescribed use, can be categorized as abuse. Once a person develops a pattern of abuse, even if he or she experiences negative consequences, that behavior becomes characteristic of addiction.
Everyone who is in the grip of addiction originally went through a phase of abuse, although not everyone who abuses will become an addict. In almost all cases, experimentation with drugs is the first step on a very slippery slope that may lead to truly tragic consequences.
Perhaps you or a loved one has already descended that slippery slope. What used to be an occasional experience (such as using drugs at raves or parties) has become an everyday occurrence. Even if you’re not using every day, your thoughts are filled with where you can get drugs, when you can use and what it will feel like. These are the thought processes of an addict.
So what do you do when you realize you’re no longer in control of your drug use? Sadly, many people remain in denial. They suffer for years before an accidental overdose, a reaction to a bad batch of drugs, or other complications from prolonged drug use cut a promising life short. Others fall victim to health problems, such as a heart attack or liver failure.
This doesn’t have to happen to you or your loved one. Help is available, not only to bring an end to drug use but to build and maintain a drug free, productive and fulfilling life. That help is only a phone call away. Please don’t wait.
